Onitsuka Tiger is approaching ready-to-wear with a new angle. Keeping the function, but updating the form with elegance and tailoring.
For the Spring Summer 2023 season, minimalism shines through the Onitsuka Tiger’s designs. Minimalism has long been part of the Japanese core values. Under the guidance of creative director Andrea Pompilio, Onitsuka Tiger marries Western tailoring influences with Japanese aesthetics.
Delivering this delicate balance, cover stars Khuong Le and Phuong Nhi step into each picture frame like stars from vintage movies, artistic and refined.
Onitsuka Tiger explores new forms of expression
This season, Onitsuka Tiger takes on the Japanese minimalistic approach and combines with Italian tailoring tradition. Once worn, each design flows naturally over the body shape as if made to measure. The brand emphasizes originality and simplicity, and encourages the cover stars freedom to explore new forms of expression.
Khuong Le burst into stardom with the movie Camelia Sisters (now available on Netflix), and recently returned to the small screen with web comedy Super Assistant. On screen, he is known to portray impeccable, suave, gentlemanly characters. But off screen, he is a reserved, down to earth person, and revealed with Harper’s Bazaar that he still keeps the habit of wearing sandals during hot days. “That moment is when I live true to myself and feel most comfortable,” he said.
Therefore he was excited to try the TIGER SETTA, Onitsuka Tiger’s latest leather flip-flop design. A proud masterpiece inspired by the traditional geta, both comfortable and artsy, perfect for dress up or dress down occasions.
Meanwhile for Phuong Nhi – who people think prefer high heels and pink dresses for she is a beauty queen – her favourite set is actually the most edgy look out of all! The Miss World Vietnam runner up explains that as model to many young Vietnamese women, she prioritizes conveying modern feminism to her fans and followers. “For a long time, fans have been familiar with the image of a cute and sweet Phuong Nhi, so I never thought I would want to change to another style”, she said. “However I discover that I really like the edgy look, especially with the MEXICO 66 SD sneaker.” This look gives her idea on how to push the envelope in dressing confidently yet stylishly everyday.
Summer layering, why not?
As life returns to a new normal post-pandemic and the need to travel resumes, young people often question how to create a personal wardrobe that is stylish yet not bulky, and can withstand the change when moving to and from places with very different weather. This is where Onitsuka Tiger leads the trend by marrying superb breathable and light materials with tailoring to create pieces that are easy to layer and pack for summer travels.
In Vietnam, hot weather creeps up earlier than later – as early as the beginning of February. On site of the Harper’s Bazaar photoshoot, the thermometer inches close to 30 degrees Celsius. And yet Phuong Nhi and Khuong Le do not even break a sweat while posing.
Khuong Le feels very comfortable in Onitsuka Tiger’s latest designs despite wearing multitude layers. “I really like it because the fabric is comfortable and airy,” he said. This is key in creating different personal looks for the summer soon to come. Meanwhile Phuong Nhi is impressed with the ease of creating different looks using all the pieces from the Spring Summer 2023 collection.
The beauty of Japanese culture conveyed through the language of contemporary fashion
It is easy to see Japanese heritage in the forms of Onitsuka Tiger’s looks this season. The traditional wear is referenced and redesigned using modern tailoring techniques.
For example, the flowing sleeves on the shiso-green WS Shirt helps create a “feminine when viewed up close and poetic when viewed from afar” shape on Phuong Nhi. Yet the drawstring waist detail on the WS Long Skirt is also reminiscent of the hakama dress worn by kyūdō archers.
The image of a kimono also appears faintly somewhere in the long sleeves. Through wide, floating form of blouse. Or more clearly in the logo printed corrugated shawl worn over the tank top and TIGER SETTA sandals.
“Old” but not “old” is the creative thinking deeply rooted in a fashion brand originating from a country that values tradition like Japan.
Not only entertaining the world with an impressive visual feast, Onitsuka Tiger above all carries the spirit of an inspirational brand. Always pursuing the mission of “awakening” the style ego within each person. Because style is the most interesting thing that people can freely experiment with.
