Following the photo shoot, Renata shared her passion for photography and her unique philosophy on capturing images in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam.
Harper’s Bazaar (HBZVN): Dear Renata Zazulak, how did you discover your passion for photography during your studies in communication design, and what motivated you to pursue it alongside your career in advertising?
RENATA ZAZULAK: Since childhood, I’ve held a deep interest in both photography and design. However, after completing my high school education, I hadn’t yet decided which creative direction to pursue. My studies offered a diverse range of exploration into various creative design avenues. Despite excelling in other subjects, my photography consistently outshone them all. At that time, I lacked the courage to solely depend on photography until my former boss asked me to fill in for a commercial photographer, creating images for an online campaign for Kia Motors. The resulting photos were so well-received that I found myself increasingly sought after for various projects.

HBZVN: What led you to take the leap into freelance fashion photography in 2021. How has your background as a Creative Director influenced your approach to photography?
RENATA ZAZULAK: The era of the pandemic brought about profound changes in me. The restrictions, limited social interactions, and prolonged periods of solitude led to deep introspection about my life and aspirations. In advertising, creativity primarily adheres to briefings, and one’s creative development is often heavily restricted due to numerous guidelines, making it challenging for someone as creatively inclined as myself.
Photography allowed me to unleash my creativity freely, accelerate my development in the field, and break free from constraints. My role as a Creative Director influenced me to transition from spontaneous photography to conceptual photography. I meticulously plan every aspect, from outfits, hairstyles, and makeup to locations, visual themes, and lighting conditions, aiming for a cohesive and harmonious overall image, much like what’s expected in my role as a creative director.

HBZVN: How would you describe the “Renata Zazulak’s photography style”? Are there any photographers or artists who have significantly influenced your work?
RENATA ZAZULAK: I fundamentally photograph according to a meticulously developed image concept. I would characterize my style as “editorial fashion photography” or “fashion storytelling photography.” My photography aims to visually convey concepts while capturing the beauty and aesthetics of fashion. Initially, I was significantly influenced by photographers like Annie Leibovitz and Peter Lindbergh. Presently, I draw inspiration from outstanding photographers like Kate Bellm and Svenja Ave.
HBZVN: Can you walk us through your creative process when planning and executing a fashion shoot? What elements do you consider cruci-al to creating a successful image?
RENATA ZAZULAK: When I’m booked as a photographer or planning a personal project, I first assess the model to determine a suitable style for them and envision a backdrop that complements their essence. I create various mood boards encompassing different styles, search for appropriate locations for outdoor shoots, organize attire that harmonizes with the location and visual theme, and ensure the right time of day, favoring sunrise, the golden hour, and the blue hour for outdoor shoots and appropriate indoor lighting for indoor shoots. Crucial elements for a successful image, in my view, include perfect lighting, adept angles, the backdrop, creative poses, and a harmonious composition.
“When working with models, I look for charisma, posing abilities, and a positive attitude toward their work. I often engage in pre-shoot communication weeks in advance, addressing their concerns and questions. During photoshoots, it’s important to me that models enjoy themselves.”
HBZVN: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a fashion photographer? Are there any achievements or projects that stand out as highlights in your career?
RENATA ZAZULAK: My biggest challenge was establishing myself in the industry and earning the respect of trained photographers and my peers for my work. Highlights of my career include being published in over 100 magazines in less than two years and having clients travel from abroad specifically for photoshoots with me, demonstrating their appreciation for both my work and my personality.

HBZVN: Apart from photography, what are some of your hobbies or interests? How do they inspire or inform your photographic work?
RENATA ZAZULAK: My interests outside of photography revolve around creativity. I enjoy exploring foreign and intriguing countries, preferably with picturesque locations for photoshoots, spending time in the forest with my dog to unwind, engaging in sports as a counterbalance to daily routines, and enjoying activities with my family and friends.
HBZVN: How has your experience with renowned advertising agencies and working with high-profile clients like Samsung and Porsche influenced your approach to fashion photography?
RENATA ZAZULAK: My experience has made me highly perfectionistic in my work as a photographer. Porsche and Samsung pay meticulous attention to detail and quality, which I‘ve adopted for my work. I‘m extremely meticulous, planning every step down to the smallest detail, reviewing images multiple times to avoid overlooking any errors, and holding myself to the same standards as my clients like Porsche and Samsung did in my previous role as a Creative Director.
