Jungmin Chun is a New York based textile artist and designer who graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Growing up and training in diverse cultures, her multicultural background has influenced her works to be more three-dimensional and unexpected. She develops knit fabrics with a focus on the sensual selection of colors and diverse use of materials to create desirable artistic concepts.
Jungmin’s work manifests into one-of-a-kind wearable knit sculptures, pushing the boundaries of knitwear through craft, extensive details, and creative application of colors. In her work, she views knitting as an exciting performance; a way to enter her creative space and break boundaries, taking inspirations from intuitive forms and vivid color palettes to materialize her emotional experience. Designed by Jungmin Chun, the brand J’EN is made as a personal experience and a bespoke piece for the individual wearer.
Wanderland by Jungmin Chun
Jungmin’s FW23 collection Wanderland is an experimental knitwear collection inspired by the mystic imaginative world that she dreams of running away to. When developing the garments, the designer immersed herself into the unconventional native world of unseeable entities that aroused her curiosity of the unknown.
Inspired by isolation, this raw, uncertain imaginative world was given life from the unreleased and shackled creative energy during times of restriction. In this imaginative fantasy world, where Jungmin herself is the explorer and adventurer, intrigued by unprecedented organic forms and raw instinctive gestures of a variety of newly discovered organisms. The Wanderland knitwear collection is an abstract manifestation of this fantasyland that she is yearning to escape to.
Each piece of garments is crafted on a knitting machine with different knitting techniques and fully fashioned that creates zero waste for sustainability.
Textiles are developed from scratch, incorporating a unique sense of aesthetics and diverse use of natural fibers to materialize the artistic fantasyland.
The process of crafting is intuitive and spontaneous, giving her the freedom for creativity and internal reflection. No fixed patterns or rules in her practice, only prefers to focus on arbitrary intuitions as it allows her to express herself best in the state of uncertainty.
Through different materials and textures, the design delivers diverse tactile experiences for the wearer and invites them into the fantastical nature of textiles. The wearers feel alive and expressive by experiencing these garments.
