An Sunyung’s journey, from the streets of Seoul to global fashion runways, is full of grace and a strong passion for fashion. As the Chief Editor of Momscareer magazine in South Korea and Executive Managing Director of Lumiere Runway fashion weeks, she has built a powerful presence in the industry.
To truly know her, one must understand her name, the city that shaped her, and the key moments of her path. An Sunyung’s name carries deep meaning. Her last name, “An,” written as “安” in Chinese, symbolizes peace, while “Sunyung” intertwines “Sun” (仙), a nod to transcending worldly suffering, with “Yung” (榮), a symbol of beauty and nobility. Her father carefully chose this name, and it has guided her throughout her life, giving her purpose and direction.
Growing up in Seoul, Sunyung was inspired by the city’s blend of tradition and modernity. The rich culture sparked her curiosity and creativity, which would later fuel her career. As a child, she loved books and stories, which led her to appreciate writing and communication.
Fashion, however, was where her heart truly lay. Drawn to the glossy pages of fashion magazines and the allure of her mother’s accessories, Sunyung found herself enchanted by the world of style and beauty. She soon found herself competing in model contests, including the prestigious ‘Miss Korea’ pageant in 2009, where she placed as the first runner-up. These experiences deepened her love for fashion and sparked her creativity.
Sunyung’s first professional steps took her into the skies as a flight attendant for China Eastern Airlines, and later Asiana Airlines in South Korea. These roles were not just jobs—they were opportunities for Sunyung to expand her horizons, both literally and figuratively. They allowed her to travel the world, exposing her to different fashion trends and enriching her understanding of style. Working as a flight attendant also taught her resilience. Dealing with difficult passengers and high-pressure situations helped her develop the maturity and perseverance that would be crucial in her fashion career.
She later earned a master’s degree in English Language and Literature, further sharpening her skills and character.
Today, Sunyung’s work is personal and reflective, drawing on emotions like joy, sadness, and happiness. Her creative process produces work that is not only visually stunning but also emotionally impactful. She is proud of her work featured in prestigious magazines and displayed on billboards, including one in New York.
She recalls a memorable moment, “During one of our photo shoots, we used empty Coca-Cola cans as props, and the creative director painstakingly connected each straw by hand. We faced many challenges, as the straws kept coming loose, but through effort and patience, we overcame them. As a result, Style Cruise magazine featured this work on one of the largest billboards in New York. I was incredibly happy and felt a deep sense of accomplishment when I heard the news. It was a touching moment, seeing all the hard work finally pay off.”
An Sunyung’s ambitions are bold. She views setbacks as opportunities for growth. She aims to become a top fashion model and establish her own brand. With determination and creativity, she is confident in overcoming any challenge that comes her way, creating fashion that reflects her personality.
