In a field dominated by men, Alessandra Tognonato has charted her own path with passion, perseverance, and an open mind. Born in Ivrea, Italy, and graduating with honors in International Politics and Diplomacy, she has spent over two decades serving in major capitals, from Buenos Aires and Berlin to Cairo and Rome, before being appointed Consul General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City in August 2025.

On the occasion of her new posting, Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam sat down with Alessandra Tognonato to discuss her work, her views on overcoming gender stereotypes, her approach to balancing leadership and motherhood, and her empowering message encouraging modern women to define success on their own terms.

HARPER’S BAZAAR: Congratulations on your appointment as the Consul General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City. What are your first impressions of the people and the city?

ALESSANDRA TOGNONATO: Ho Chi Minh City is a wonderful city. The city is fast and full of energy, and the people are incredibly warm. They make me feel seen as an individual with my own personality, not just a small part of a big metropolis.

HARPER’S BAZAAR: Looking back from your student days in diplomacy to now as Italy’s Consul General, what has inspired you along the way?

ALESSANDRA TOGNONATO: Diplomacy has been my dream since childhood. I never considered another path. After twenty-four years, I’m still pursuing the same passion I had as a young diplomacy student. This truly is my ideal job. My greatest motivation is representing my country. I’m proud of the Italian way of life, our identity, and our unique approach to work and creativity.

HARPER’S BAZAAR: What do you think are the most distinctive qualities you bring as a diplomat?

ALESSANDRA TOGNONATO: I believe my curiosity, positive energy, and sense of humor set me apart. I also love change. Every place I’ve lived and worked has taught me something new about people and cultures. A smile and optimism always help me overcome cultural and linguistic barriers and find common ground in diplomatic matters.

HARPER’S BAZAAR: How do you view the role of women in global politics today, a field long dominated by men?

ALESSANDRA TOGNONATO: I don’t see gender as a complicated issue. For me, it’s hard to define someone’s role based solely on gender. I believe every individual, regardless of gender or identity, can contribute to their community and society.

HARPER’S BAZAAR: Have you ever faced gender bias in the workplace?

ALESSANDRA TOGNONATO: Yes, especially after I had children. But I see it more as an attitude issue rather than one strictly about gender. You know, I’ve met many men who genuinely support gender equality and many women who still carry gender bias within themselves.

HARPER’S BAZAAR: As a mother of two, how do you balance family and work?

ALESSANDRA TOGNONATO: The key is prioritizing what truly matters. I always try to adjust my priorities on both sides. I’m also fortunate to have two understanding and kind children who know how demanding my job can be. They always find ways to make me feel at ease at home, often with a warm cup of tea.

HARPER’S BAZAAR: In your opinion, how are women shaping today’s modern workplace?

ALESSANDRA TOGNONATO: I think women today can completely move past old stereotypes or gender norms. No matter the position or industry, a woman should be evaluated based on her competence, diligence, and attitude, not her gender.

HARPER’S BAZAAR: What helps women maintain confidence and individuality in the workplace?

ALESSANDRA TOGNONATO: Be the best at what you do. I always tell young people, both men and women, to give their all and stay true to themselves. That’s the most powerful way to make an impact.

HARPER’S BAZAAR: How important is personal style for female leaders?

ALESSANDRA TOGNONATO: I often say, “Every day is Sunday,” meaning that every morning you should give yourself the privilege of showing up as your best self. That doesn’t mean chasing every fashion trend – it’s about feeling confident in what you wear so you can present yourself with grace and confidence.
