Foot binding was an extreme fashion trend in ancient China just like corsetry in ancient Western women’s fashion. It was a painful practice that limited women’s mobility and resulted in lifelong disabilities. The anti-footbinding campaigns in the early 20th century highlighted women’s strength and perseverance, and also inspired the collaboration of Yueyao Li and Vivian Li.
Vivian Li’s new collection aims to challenge foot binding tradition and “Turn Over A New Leaf” and highlights the strength and perseverance of women.
Inspired by designer Vivian Li’s new collection, creative director and model Yueyao Li came up with the concept “Hidden Jade”, which means a jade in the rock. She picked a rock field in upstate New York to depict this story about the strength and bravery of women overcoming restrictions.
Through the reflection of mirrors, the light of fog, and the rocky background, Yueyao showed not only the reflection of the old foot binding tradition but also the strength and bravery of women overcoming the restrictions – like a Jade in the stone, when the feudal system finally broke down, shining in the rebirth.
