Crafting Fashion with Purpose: A Conversation with Misha Skova

Designer, entrepreneur and model Misha Skova manages two distinct brands and creates their unique voices and identities.

Misha Skova draws inspiration from art, architecture, nature, and cultural influences, emphasizing hands-on experimentation with fabrics and textures to realize her vision. Skova’s commitment to sustainability and ethical production is central to her design philosophy, from sourcing materials responsibly to supporting local artisans.

For her, fashion is not only a form of personal expression but also a platform for social and cultural commentary, aiming to convey messages of sustainability, inclusivity, and empowerment through her designs.

Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam (HBZVN): Can you describe your creative process when designing a new collection? What inspires your design choices and how do you bring your vision to life?

MISHA SKOVA: So, when I’m diving into a new collection, I like to soak up inspiration from all sorts of places. It could be art, architecture, the great outdoors, or even cultural nods. I start by jotting down rough sketches and concepts, and then I tweak and refine them as I go. Turning my ideas into reality is all about getting hands-on with fabrics and textures, trying different combinations until I hit that perfect vibe I’m aiming for.

HBZVN: Fashion is constantly evolving. How do you stay updated with the latest trends and incorporate them into your designs while maintaining your unique style and brand identity?

MISHA SKOVA: Balancing trendiness with our core values of sustainability and “Made in the USA” for LACAUSA, and eco-friendliness for Skova, adds an extra layer to my tightrope act. While I’m keeping tabs on the latest fashion buzz through magazines, runway trends, and social media scrolls, I’m also mindful of our commitment to sustainability.

For LACAUSA, it’s about ensuring that our designs not only look good but also contribute to a better world by being made responsibly right here in the USA.

And with Skova, we’ve recently made a big move from China to Vietnam, which has got me buzzing with excitement over the eco and sustainable programs we’re diving into. So, as I navigate the ever-shifting currents of fashion trends, I’m always filtering them through our values, striving to strike that perfect balance between what’s hot and what’s right for our brands.

HBZVN: Harper’s Bazaar celebrates diversity and inclusivity in the fashion industry. How do you ensure your designs are inclusive and representative of a wide range of individuals and body types?

MISHA SKOVA: Harper’s Bazaar really hits the mark by celebrating diversity and inclusivity in fashion, and that’s something I wholeheartedly embrace in my designs. Take LACAUSA, for example. We’re all about honoring all body types, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and confident in our pieces. From flowy dresses to versatile separates, our collections are designed to flatter a variety of shapes and sizes.

Now, when it comes to Skova, it’s all about that beach lifestyle vibe. Our swimsuits are crafted to make everyone feel amazing, no matter their body type. Whether you’re hitting the waves or lounging poolside, Skova’s got you covered with styles that are as stylish as they are inclusive.

HBZVN: Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. Could you share some insights into how your brand is addressing environmental and ethical concerns in your design and production processes?

MISHA SKOVA: Sustainability takes the top spot for both SKOVA and LACAUSA, and it’s a value we hold close to our hearts. We’re all about keeping it local whenever possible, whether that means making most of our products right here in the USA or sourcing from factories that prioritize eco-friendly and sustainable practices. Plus, we’re big on the handmade touch – just look at our blankets crafted in Morocco for SKOVA, where talented women artisans put their skills to work, not only creating beautiful pieces but also supporting their families.

Over at LACAUSA, we’re always thinking of ways to give back and reduce waste. That’s why we launched a recycled program where you can sell back your clothing, giving it a second life while allowing others to snag some stylish finds on our website. And guess what? We’re planning to roll out this program again in the future because sustainability isn’t just a trend for us – it’s a way of life.

HBZVN: Collaboration is often a key aspect of the fashion world. Can you tell us about any memorable collaborations you’ve been a part of and how they influenced your work or perspective on fashion?

MISHA SKOVA: Collaborations in the fashion world are like sparks of creativity igniting new possibilities, and I’ve been fortunate to partake in some remarkable ones. One standout collaboration was with Intentionally Blank for LACAUSA, where our fusion of styles resulted in a unique capsule collection that resonated with our shared aesthetic and values. Another memorable partnership was with Rachel Zoe for Skova, blending her iconic style with our beach lifestyle brand to create pieces that exuded effortless elegance. Additionally, collaborating with top model agencies for Skova capsule collections brought together diverse perspectives and talents, enriching our designs with their unique insights.

Each collaboration has left an indelible mark on my perspective of fashion. Working alongside different creatives has shown me the immense power of collaboration, sparking new ideas and pushing the boundaries of my creativity. It’s a constant exchange of inspiration and innovation, reminding me that fashion is not just about individual expression but also about the collective synergy of creative minds. Witnessing our collaborative creations come to life on the runway and in stores has been immensely gratifying, highlighting the transformative magic that occurs when diverse talents unite. These experiences reinforce my belief that by joining forces, we can create something truly extraordinary in the world of fashion.

HBZVN: Fashion often has a profound impact on culture and society. Are there any social or cultural messages you aim to convey through your designs, and how do you use fashion as a means of expression or making a statement?

MISHA SKOVA: Fashion isn’t just about clothes; it’s a powerful medium for expressing ideas and influencing culture. In my designs, I strive to convey messages that resonate with social and cultural issues close to my heart. For example, with LACAUSA, our emphasis on sustainability isn’t just about making eco-friendly choices. It’s a statement about the importance of mindful consumption and protecting our planet for future generations.

Similarly, with Skova, we celebrate the beauty of diversity and inclusivity, showcasing a range of body types and ethnicities in our campaigns to challenge conventional beauty standards. By featuring diverse models and promoting body positivity, we aim to empower individuals to embrace their unique identities and feel confident in their skin.

HBZVN: Fashion has the power to spark conversations and provoke thought on important issues. How do you use fashion as a means of cultural commentary and expression?

MISHA SKOVA: Whether it’s through bold designs that challenge norms or subtle symbolism that speaks volumes, it’s about using my platform to amplify voices, promote inclusivity, and advocate for positive change in society.

When I’m designing a new collection, I usually start by immersing myself in various sources of inspiration. This could be anything from art and architecture to nature and cultural references. I sketch out initial ideas and concepts, refining them as I go along. Bringing my vision to life involves a lot of experimentation with fabrics, textures, and silhouettes until I achieve the desired look and feel.

HBZVN: How do you keep up with trends?

MISHA SKOVA: Keeping up with the latest trends while staying true to my brand’s identity is all about finding a balance. I regularly scan fashion magazines, attend runway shows, and follow influential designers on social media to stay updated. However, I always filter these trends through my creative lens, ensuring that they complement rather than overshadow my unique style and brand ethos.
