If there’s one thing Kim Lim wants the world to see today, it isn’t the luxury lifestyle or the red-carpet appearances that have long defined her public image.
After years of being associated with fashion, affluence and social influence, the woman on Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam’s digital cover reveals a different side of herself, one shaped by entrepreneurship, leadership and the responsibility of building something that lasts.
Building a business from a personal story
Behind the impeccably curated image is a woman whose days are spent in meetings, on business trips scouting the latest beauty technologies, and refining every touchpoint of the customer experience across Illumia and Papilla.
Interestingly, Kim Lim’s entrepreneurial journey did not begin with a meticulously crafted business plan. It began with one of the most personal experiences of her life: motherhood.

After the birth of her first child, Kim experienced postpartum hair loss, a challenge shared by countless women but rarely discussed openly. Instead of accepting it as an inevitable part of the journey, she started searching for solutions she wished had existed for herself. That deeply personal experience eventually became the foundation of Papilla.
Looking back on the years spent building Illumia, her skincare and aesthetic brand, alongside Papilla, Kim doesn’t consider expanding the business or investing in cutting-edge technologies to be her boldest move. For her, the defining moment was much simpler: having the courage to begin.
“Taking the very first step was the boldest decision I ever made. Papilla came from a very personal experience with postpartum hair loss, and I wanted to create solutions that I wished I had… but I believed in the vision enough to see it through”
Perhaps because both brands were born from her own experiences, Kim has never viewed beauty as simply selling products or treatments. Instead, her ambition has always been to create solutions that genuinely improve people’s confidence and quality of life.

In the industry, many brands race to keep up with what’s new. Kim sees innovation differently. For her, it isn’t a marketing strategy, it has always been embedded in the DNA of Illumia and Papilla.
“From day one, I’ve never stopped looking for better ways to improve our customers’ results and experiences. I’m always thinking about what else we can do better or what kind of solutions are still missing in the market”
Many of those ideas are inspired by her own experiences, conversations with customers, or discoveries made while travelling the world. It’s also why Kim personally tries every treatment and product before introducing them to the market. Remaining deeply involved in every stage of development allows her to ensure that every innovation stays true to the brands’ original purpose while continually raising the standard of their face, skin, body, scalp and wellness solutions.

Yet as the business expanded, Kim realised that perhaps the hardest lesson of leadership wasn’t learning how to build, it was learning how to let go.
“In the beginning, I wanted to be involved in almost everything because every treatment, every detail, and every customer experience mattered so much to me. As the brands grew, I realised that I couldn’t do everything myself”
Today, leadership means something very different from what it did when she first started. Rather than holding onto every decision, Kim has learned to trust her team, empower them to grow, and accept that a company can only move forward when the people behind it are given room to lead alongside her.
Kim Lim, beyond the spotlight

Despite entering a new chapter of her career, Kim Lim continues to face one familiar question: how does she balance motherhood with running a business? What concerns her isn’t the question itself, but the fact that it is almost always directed at women.
“I always get a lot of questions about how difficult it is to juggle motherhood with my career. I don’t think men get that a lot even if they have families”
For Kim, raising a family should never be seen as a responsibility carried solely by women, nor should professional success require women to sacrifice their personal lives. “I feel that everyone, women or men, all have their own challenges in their personal life… Men should be equally present in both their careers and their families too”.

That perspective also reflects how she defines the modern woman today. Compared to previous generations, women have far more choices. They can build successful careers, raise families, pursue both or define success entirely on their own terms. “What matters is building a life that you’re proud of, whether that’s through your family, your career, or both”.
Perhaps that’s why, when asked to describe herself in three words, Kim chooses resilient, curious and, perhaps…patient.
She laughs before adding the last word. Ten years ago, she admits, she was far more impulsive, often reacting emotionally and feeling the need to constantly prove herself. Today, experience has taught her to slow down, embrace change and understand that every challenge offers an opportunity to grow.

The same evolution has also reshaped the meaning of legacy. Years ago, Kim often spoke about building something her children could be proud of. Today, that vision has become much broader than personal success.
“I hope my children see that everything was built with purpose. If our treatments can help people regain their confidence and improve their lives, then that’s a legacy that’s meaningful to me”
And if she could leave one message for the next generation, it wouldn’t be about fame, wealth or achievement. In an era where social media celebrates carefully curated perfection, Kim believes the greatest strength lies elsewhere.
“Having the confidence to be yourself. Social media often shows everyone’s highlights, but not the challenges behind them… what matters most is having the courage to be yourself every single day”.
