A beautiful line from the famous poem The Tale of Kieu was the inspirational starting point for An Ode to Traditional Asian Grace – a study of sculptural elegance, modern minimalism and avant-garde artistry.

“Her eyes like calm autumn water, her brows like distant spring hills” was written by Nguyen Du towards the end of his life in the 1810s in his poetic masterpiece that is still read and admired to this day.

Dubai-based photographer Amer Mohamad carefully considered this delicate piece of poetry as he began to craft a shoot featuring pieces by Alaïa, Chats by C.Dam, Lilia Fisher, Givenchy and Amplitude Design.

Set against clean backdrops, Mohamad’s striking images spark a visual dialogue between strength and sensuality, structure and fluidity. Each look feels intentional, refined, and quietly powerful.

Using geometry as its theme, a sleek black body-hugging dress with circular cut-outs creates a sense of rhythm and movement that feels architectural. Styled with oversized lacquered bangles and statement rings, the accessories echo the dress’s graphic mood. Contemporary and edgy, An Ode to Traditional Asian Grace embodies Mohamad’s daring approach to fashion photography.

Elsewhere, a translucent high-neck piece contrasts with the warmth of a fur wrap. Minimal yet poised and powerful, the interplay between sheer fabric and fur creates a tactility that feels luxurious and modern – another hallmark of Mohamad’s work that sets him apart as one of the Middle East’s most progressive artists.

Mohamad then shifts the narrative in a more romantic direction with a flowing ivory gown that cascades down a narrow, monochromatic space. A dramatic ruffled detail blooms across the bodice, adding softness and movement to the elongated silhouette. The cramped and angular setting lets the elegance of the gown shine while simultaneously intriguing the eye.

Then, against another minimalist backdrop, a poised model embodies modern elegance in a sculptural slate-grey piece. Architectural and effortless, the dress drapes in an ethereal manner.
Another image in the series sees the model cocooned in a stunning headpiece that conjures up a sense of serenity and high art. Later, Mohamed again shows his talent for sculptural scene-setting with a photograph that demonstrates the fluid lines of a white hooded dress.
Since relocating to the UAE from Russia in 2022, Mohamad has become a defining visual voice across the region’s luxury landscape, shooting both high-profile editorials for leading fashion titles and major advertising campaigns for houses such as Dior, Chanel, Cartier, and Piaget.
