In a world where beauty and intelligence coalesce seamlessly, Katherina Roth emerges as a testament to the power of a multifaceted pursuit. Initially drawn into the captivating realm of modeling, Katherina’s journey took an unexpected turn when the allure of business analytics beckoned. Then it was a moment of serendipity that thrust her into the world of hedge funds.
Rooted in her upbringing in Austria, with a blend of Eastern European and Austrian influences, Katherina holds honesty, respect, and integrity as values that guide both her personal and professional life. These values, she asserts, have been instrumental in building trust and fostering meaningful relationships.
In this exclusive interview, Katherina Roth invites us into the interplay of her dual worlds – where intellect meets allure, and discipline dances with creativity.
Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam (HBZ): Beauty and intelligence are a strong combination. You were already pursuing a modeling career when you became interested in trading. What inspired you to enter the world of business analytics?
KATHERINA ROTH: I have already found my interest for economics in high school and it grew over time. Additionaly being around many entrepreneurs I felt a strong desire to prove myself in the business world. I had a marketing agency with my business partner who still runs it. However due to my busy travelling schedule I decided to sell my shares and pursue trading which gives me a lot more flexibility and time for modeling.
HBZ: Tell me about a time when your accurate market analysis impressed a hedge fund manager so much that he asked you to work in the field. Did you have any doubts before you agreed?
KATHERINA ROTH: Before getting the job offer, I actually did not expect any of that and was not looking for a position. I met my boss through friends and we started talking about some market moves, we had a different opinion and it turned out I was right. Over the course of the following weeks he has continued asking me about some analysis and found my work valuable so he offered me the position. I did hesitate for a week and agreed. I’m a very curious person, my interest and passion for it grew along and despite big setbacks, as every trader, I kept going.
HBZ: What attracts you most in the modeling world and what in the trading world? These professions are completely different, but is there anything in common? What skills from the world of modeling have been useful in your work as a trader?
KATHERINA ROTH: What is unique about modeling is the ability to transform yourself, which I will talk about later. I love the aspect of creativity and working with creative and passionate poeple. It’s hard to meet someone in modeling who is not passionate, because this fuel is what keeps you surviving in the industry. The ability to transform yourself in the modeling world and constantly dealing with different settings also transfers to trading. As a trader, you have to be very adaptable to how the market moves and its ability to change direction quickly, which can invalidate a setup. You have to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations. The other aspect is discipline, while you can’t be too rigid in your market approach and stuck in an opinion you have to be equally disciplined – to show up and remove mental biases and view things objectively. In modeling discipline manifests as weight maintenance and beauty care.
HBZ: What traditional values are of particular importance to you in your professional life?
KATHERINA ROTH: In both my personal and professional life, I am driven by the same values, as the authenticity of who I am does not create a division between these two aspects. I grew up in Austria, however, my Mum is from Eastern Europe, and my Dad is Austrian. They both introduced me to values important to them, as well as the cultural values and traditions that, despite many similarities, have some differences. The most important values for me are honesty, respect, integrity. They allow me to build trust and better relationships with people around me. They are coherent with my personality, and I believe that honesty in my life is what has contributed to where I am.
HBZ: How do you see yourself in a few years, what goals do you set for yourself? Maybe you want to try yourself in another role?
KATHERINA ROTH: In my professional life, I imagine continuing my success in training and maybe even becoming a mentor to the new generation. However, in my personal life, I plan to take on the roles of a mother and wife, as I believe family is the most important factor contibuting to my happiness.
HBZ: Beauty requires care and discipline. How do you keep fit, do you have any mandatory self-care rituals?
KATHERINA ROTH: You’re spot on. In my opinion, the way sustainable beauty works without too excessive additional procedures is as simple and difficult as staying healthy. Beauty also links with longevity, a topic I am deeply passionate about and I found that following a routine that may give me maximum life quality, also enhances beauty. There are the obvious: quality sleep, bodily hydration, accurate nutrition and fitness. I pay big importance to my skin which gets dry in no time, I keep it hydrated with olive oil – which works well on my skin type but may not work on yours. I also try to work on my mind and meditate for a couple of minutes before I start the day.
